An illustrative interview with Naveed Ali Qureshi of Vortex Digital AI comparing Shopify, WooCommerce, PrestaShop and Wix for ecommerce businesses in Spain, covering Bizum, Redsys and IVA.
We're launching an online store in Spain and can't decide between Shopify, WooCommerce, PrestaShop and Wix. Where do we even start?
Start with how much technical maintenance you actually want to own. Shopify and Wix are fully hosted — less setup, less server management. WooCommerce and PrestaShop are self-hosted, which gives more control and lower software cost but means you're responsible for hosting, updates and security. For a Spain-based store, the bigger deciding factor is usually payment and tax integration, not just the platform's general reputation.
Does it matter which platform we pick for accepting Bizum?
It matters in practice. Bizum is expected by many Spanish shoppers alongside cards, so check whether your payment provider's Bizum integration is natively supported on your shortlisted platform or needs a workaround. Shopify and WooCommerce both support Bizum through supported payment gateways; PrestaShop typically needs a specific module. This is worth confirming before committing to a platform, not after.
What about Redsys? We keep hearing that's important for Spain.
Redsys is the payment gateway used by most Spanish banks, so if you want to work directly with a Spanish bank's merchant account, Redsys compatibility matters. WooCommerce and PrestaShop have long-standing Redsys plugins/modules since they're open-source and widely used in Spain. Shopify supports Redsys through specific approved apps rather than natively — worth checking current app availability for your exact bank.
How does IVA (Spanish VAT) factor into the platform choice?
Every serious ecommerce platform can technically calculate IVA, but how easily it handles Spain's specific rules — different rates for different product categories, invoicing requirements, EU cross-border VAT (OSS) if you sell beyond Spain — varies. WooCommerce and PrestaShop, being open-source, have mature Spain-specific tax plugins built by the local developer community. Shopify's tax settings are simpler to configure but you may need a tax app for more complex IVA scenarios.
If you had to recommend one platform for a small Spain-based store just starting out, what would it be?
I'd resist giving a single universal answer — it genuinely depends on your budget, technical comfort, and catalog size. A small store wanting minimal maintenance often does well on Shopify despite slightly higher monthly cost. A store wanting full control and lower ongoing software cost, with someone comfortable managing updates, often fits WooCommerce or PrestaShop better. Wix suits very simple catalogs where design flexibility for content pages matters more than deep ecommerce features.
Can you actually help us set up whichever one we choose, including Bizum and Redsys?
Yes — platform setup, Bizum and Redsys integration, and IVA configuration are all part of what we do for Spain-based ecommerce projects, along with migration if you're moving from an existing store.
Factors that matter most for Spain-based stores specifically.
| Factor | Shopify | WooCommerce | PrestaShop | Wix |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hosting | Fully hosted | Self-hosted (own hosting) | Self-hosted (own hosting) | Fully hosted |
| Typical setup effort | Low | Medium–High | Medium–High | Low |
| Bizum support | Via supported gateways | Via supported gateways | Usually needs a module | Limited/varies |
| Redsys support | Via approved apps | Mature plugins available | Mature modules available | Limited/varies |
| IVA/Spain tax handling | Built-in, simpler cases; app for complex | Mature Spain-specific plugins | Mature Spain-specific modules | Basic |
| Best fit | Low-maintenance stores | Full control, custom needs | Full control, EU-market heritage | Very simple catalogs |
There's no single best platform for every case — Shopify and Wix suit stores wanting minimal maintenance, while WooCommerce and PrestaShop suit stores wanting more control and mature Spain-specific tax and payment plugins. The right choice depends on budget, technical comfort, and catalog size.
Yes, Bizum can be supported on Shopify through compatible payment gateways — availability depends on which payment provider and app you connect.
Both have established Redsys plugins/modules due to their open-source ecosystems and long use in the Spanish market, which is why many Spain-based stores on these platforms integrate directly with a Spanish bank's Redsys merchant account.
All major platforms can calculate IVA, but WooCommerce and PrestaShop have more mature Spain-specific tax plugins from their open-source communities, while Shopify's built-in tax settings are simpler but may need an app for more complex IVA or EU cross-border scenarios.
Wix suits smaller, simpler catalogs where content/design flexibility matters more than deep ecommerce or payment customization — for stores needing tighter Bizum/Redsys integration, WooCommerce, PrestaShop or Shopify are typically a better fit.
